Our Program Priorities
Establishing a Tribal Village as the center of life for our people, providing housing, cultural space, health care, education, and stewardship programs for tribal members and their families.
Gaining Land Access to ancestral lands for gatherings, cultural events, and stewardship, deepening tribal ties to heritage.
Revitalizing our Culture through language, dance, and history strengthens tribal member connection to tribe and one another.
Educating the Community to enhance public understanding of Muwekma history, current priorities, and ways to offer support.
Strategic Plan Priorities
In 2023, the MOPF Board of Directors finalized a three-year strategic plan, prioritizing robust organizational effectiveness. Our strategic priorities are to:
Priority #1: Develop Organization
Design programs aligned with tribal priorities with an associated fundraising plan for immediate and long term expenses. Further refine strategic guides including our mission, vision, tribal needs assessment, values statement, theory of change.
Priority #2: Increase Capacity
Recruit an Executive Director, additional staff, contractors, board members, and volunteers with an emphasis on the recruitment of tribal members. Strengthen governance systems. Deepen connection between the Tribe and MOPF
Priority #3: Strengthen Partnerships
Form relationships and seek partnerships with funders and conservation organizations. Effectively engage with allies who wish to support MOPF.
A message from our Culture Bearer, Joey iyolopixtli Torres
This summer, I rode alongside our Chairwoman Charlene on the Trail of Truth, carrying ancient prayers and ceremonies across 3,000 miles. That journey showed me something powerful: when we share our spiritual traditions, people don't just listen - they join our fight. Now, as your Culture Bearer, I'm asking you to join another sacred journey: the revival of our ceremonial ways.
When the US Government banned our ceremonies, our ancestors kept praying. When they forbade our language, our grandmothers whispered it to their children. When they tried to erase our spiritual traditions, our people held them in their hearts. Today, as your Culture Bearer, I'm leading the revival of these sacred ways - but I need your help to bring them fully back to life.
To bring our transformative plans to life, we need your support. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by December 31st to launch our 2025 initiatives. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to this crucial target. Your gift will amplify our efforts and create lasting impact on the Muwekma Ohlone people and the ancestral lands we cherish. Together, we can revive our traditions and strengthen our community.
With gratitude,
Joey Torres
Culture Bearer and Board Member of the Muwekma Ohlone Preservation Foundation
P.S. Your support today will preserve and promote the heritage of our tribe. With your donation, we can and will continue this important work together. Thank you for standing with us on this sacred journey.
